The Victoria and Albert museum has over four million items in its extensive collection and they are
displayed in 146 separate galleries. These galleries cover themes including clothing and fashion, to photographs and furniture and they combine together to make the V and A the biggest museum of its kind in the world.
A legacy
Construction of the Victoria and Albert museum commenced with the laying of a foundation stone by Queen Victoria in 1899 and the museum and its contents were said to be one of her passions.
Also part of the Victoria and Albert museum are the National Art gallery, the Theatre museum (Covent Garden), the Bethnal Green museum of Childhood and the Wellington museum.

The museum's 146 galleries hold a vast array of exhibits that include ceramics, glass, jewellery, paintings, textiles, fashion, sculpture, metal works and photographs. These exhibits come from around the globe and span a time line of three thousand years and several different cultures. The collection is unique and extraordinary and has no rival.
Location and entry
The Victoria and Albert museum is found on Cromwell Road, Kensington and there is an underground foot tunnel from the South Kensington Tube station to the museum. Entry to the museum is free and it variety of displays makes it surprisingly accessible to families and all age groups.
